Tutorial:The Best Way to Fold & Store Bed Sheets

Let’s be honest, folding bed sheets is a pain. The whole “elastic edge thing” on the fitted sheet is annoying and never folds flat.   And just like Tupperware lids and socks, pieces of my bed sheet sets would mysteriously get separated and lost in the linen closet.  I used to haphazardly fold my sheets and then stuff them into my shelves (that is probably how and why I misplaced so many pieces).  Not exactly doing things “with a touch of luxe.”

Until I learned this simple trick.

This is, hands down, the best way to store your bed sheets as well as organize your linen closet.  Simply fold and stack the top and fitted sheet a top one another and then tuck them inside the matching pillowcase. Viola!  No more bulky folded sheets or missing pieces.

The Best Way to Fold & Store Bed Sheets

The Pillow case

  • Lay the pillow case out flat.  Take the closed edge of the pillow case and fold it up 1/8 of the way.
  • Fold the pillowcase in half, where the open side is on the top.
  • Set aside.

The Fitted Sheet

  • Lay the fitted sheet out flat.  Fold it in half lengthwise by taking the two bottom corner seams of the bed sheet and aligning and tucking them into the two top corner seams. (This is the trickiest part of the whole thing, I promise, and may take some practice).
  • Once the corners are tucked, start adjusting and pulling on the folded sheet to make it as square and flat as possible.
  • Fold the fitted sheet in fourths, so it ends up looking like a long skinny rectangle.
  • Using the original folded pillow case as a size guide, begin to fold the fitted sheet rectangle into that size (it usually ends up being folded in fourths).
  • Set aside

The Bed Sheet

  • Lay the bed sheet out flat and fold in half lengthwise (where the top and bottom edge of the sheets align).
  • Just like with the fitted sheet, begin to fold this sheet in fourths to make a long skinny rectangle.
  • Fold the skinny rectangle in fourths. It should be similar to, if not exactly the same size, as the folded fitted sheet.
  • Stack the two sheets on top of one another.

The Second Pillow Case (if you have one)

  • Lay the second pillowcase out flat.
  • Fold the pillowcase into thirds lengthwise and then fold in half crosswise.
  • Stack this pillowcase on top of the folded sheets.

How to Store

  • Taking the open edge of the original folded pillowcase and place the folded and stacked bed sheet, fitted sheet, and optional second pillowcase inside.
  • Take the loose side of the outer pillowcase and tuck it between the fitted and folded sheet.
  • Repeat on the other side.
Beautifully folded sheets that are organized and kept together in your linen closet.
