DIY Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz

“WE’RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD!!”

With Halloween just around the corner, costume prep is in full swing!  This year, my daughter wants to be Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.  Finding her a costume was easy.  The famous ruby slippers on the other hand, not so much.  I was able to find these sparkly shoes in infant or adult sizes, but nothing that was reasonably priced for her.  So I entered DIY mode and decided to make her a pair myself.  Armed with a giant jar of red glitter, mod podge, and a pair of Target ballet flats, I set out to make a dazzling pair of ruby slippers.  This project was surprisingly easy and fast.  The most time consuming part was waiting for the mod podge to dry.  It was so simple to do my 6 year old daughter made one of the shoes all by herself.

DIY: Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz

Supplies

  • mod podge
  • red glitter
  • assorted size paintbrushes
  • a pair of shoes
  • a cardboard box or large tray

Directions

  • Wipe off any dust or dirt from the shoes you want to decorate.  The mod podge works best on a clean surface.

My daughter loved being able to help make her Halloween costume.
  • Working in small sections, paint a thin layer of mod podge onto the shoe.  Sprinkle a generous amount of glitter on top of the mod podge.  Repeat the process in small sections all around the outer surface of the shoe.
  • Let the glue dry for 20 minutes.

Trust me, the mod podge dries clear.
  • Paint a thin top coat of mod podge over the glitter.
  • Let the shoes dry overnight.
  • Shake off any excess glitter.  Use a clean damp paper towel to wipe out any glitter that may have stuck to the inside of the shoe.

    Yellow Brick Road Ready!

Helpful Tips

  • There is no way to avoid the mess of glitter.  To keep the chaos somewhat at bay, I highly recommend doing this project in a controlled area.  I used the IKEA Smula trays for the gluing and glittering and they worked fabulously.
  • I found the best way to clean up any spilled glitter is to wipe it with a clean wet paper towel or Clorox wet wipe.

This glitter shoe project is not limited to only a Dorothy costume.  So many great Halloween dress-up ideas can use glitter shoes like an 80’s rock star, roaring 20’s flapper, Tinkerbell, a unicorn.  The possibilities and creativity are endless.  Happy glittering!
