One Dress, 4 Different Styles

Expand your wardrobe without spending a dime. Find out how to style one dress, 4 different ways, with items that are already in your closet.

This goes without saying but re-wearing the clothes in your closet is a smart thing to do. As much as I love fashion and shopping, I can’t constantly be buying new clothes for every season, trend, and event. But there’s always the problem of not wanting to be stuck wearing the same thing over and over again. What’s a fashionista on a budget supposed to do? This is where shopping your closet comes into play. Today I am sharing how to wear one dress, 4 different ways, using wardrobe staples from my closet. These looks are simple, chic, and easy to recreate so you too can shop your closet and get the most wear out of items you already own!

The basic dress

I purchased this ruffle neck peasant dress last Spring from J.Crew Factory. I loved everything about it: the length, pattern, material, and cut. Usually I steer clear of patterns (unless it’s leopard print) but this dress was too pretty to pass up. It is beautiful on its own but I knew this classic style could be worn many ways.

Look 1: Boots, Belt, & Bag

Swap out the traditional heels look and wear a pair of knee high boots. This change in shoes completely transforms the look of this dress. Wear a belt to give your dress an added detail and for waist definition. I styled mine with this skinny black belt but a chunky belt would look great too. I thought this look would be great for the office so I paired it with an oversized tote to carry ALL the things.

Look 2: Sweater, Heels, & Handbag

Dress with sweater and heels

Wear a sweater over your dress so it looks like a two piece outfit. Make sure your sweater is close fitting and that it does not overpower the pattern in your dress. This look was a little more feminine to me so I chose to pair it with heels and a small handbag. Don’t be afraid to add color with your shoe or purse as long as it matches the dress or sweater.

Look 3: Denim Jacket, Sun Hat, & Sandals

You can instantly take your dress from formal to fun by switching up a few accessories. Try wearing a cropped denim jacket as a light layer. The cropped length helps to accentuate the waist line of the dress. T-strap sandals are a great summer shoe that can be dressed up or down. If you are looking to purchase a pair, I recommend buying ones in a neutral or skin-tone color because they are more versatile to wear. And nothing looks better with a dress than a cute straw hat.

Look 4: Go Nude (kind of)

Dress with neutral accessories

Neutral colors are always a good idea. Style your dress with nude colored accessories for an instantly elevated look. I chose to wear these open-toed nude heels and carry a tan clutch. This is a great formal-ish daytime or afternoon outfit (think summer wedding guest). If you want to add a color pop to this neutral look, wear a brightly colored lip or nail polish.

More Style Ideas

  • Wear a button down chambray or denim top and tie at the waist.
  • Throw on a chunky knit cardigan for a cozy vibe.
  • Wear with tennis shoes or sneakers for a casual weekend style.
  • Add a fitted blazer for a work-wear look
