My First Microneedling Experience: The Good, the Bad & the Pretty

In this blog post I share my first experience with microneedling; the popular & minimally invasive skincare treatment that is taking the beauty world by storm.

The things we do for beauty

Let me preface this by saying, if there’s a new beauty treatment, serum, or product to try, I’m your girl. My skin is not sensitive, overly dry or super oily. And I have a light mix of wrinkles and age spots (welcome to your 40’s), small acne scars (thanks teenage years), and light melasma (thanks pregnancy hormones). So basically the “perfect storm” for anything skin care. Last week, I visited Bella Med Spa, the Atlanta area’s top anti-aging skincare treatment facility. I met with Olivia, a beautiful aesthetician with the most perfect glowing skin I’ve ever seen. She recommended a microneedling treatment for my skin and I said yes with zero hesitation. So let’s dive right in to all the details about my first microneedling experience.

What Is Microneedling?

My First Microneedling Experience

Microneedling (also called collagen-induction therapy) is when a wand, affixed with several micro needles, is rolled across your face at varying speeds and intensities. The microneedles, finer than a strand of hair, make tiny wounds in the skin. The body reacts to these minuscule needle pricks by producing new collagen-rich tissue making the skin stronger, healthier and more radiant.

What Does Microneedling Treat?

Microneedling treats a variety of skin concerns, especially anti-aging. My main reasons for choosing this treatment were to help with reducing my fine lines, reducing some enlarged pores on my forehead, and lightening the discoloration on my cheeks from hormones and sun damage.

Does It Hurt?

Yes, but not that bad. I’d rate it a 5 out of 10. Olivia, my aesthetician, applied a Lidocaine cream to my face before my treatment to help manage pain. My forehead area was the most sensitive but Olivia assured me this was normal because that area of the face is more bony and has less tissue for “cushion”.

How Much Did You Bleed?

Actually, very little. Yes, the photos are dramatic but at no time was I actually gushing blood. Remember, the needles are as fine as a strand of hair so my skin bled at the initial prick but that was it.

What Was The Recovery Like?

Immediately after my microneedling, Olivia applied an Alastin Skin Nectar which helped promote healing and added an extra boost to my results. She also used a cool jade roller on my face after treatment to help calm my skin and both of these really helped. My skin was red for the rest of the day and evening. It looked and felt like a mild sunburn. But all sensitivity and redness was gone by the next morning.

Be sure to schedule your treatment wisely because you need to avoid sweating, makeup, and the sun for 24 hours after. And Olivia advised me to avoid any harsh facial products like acids or exfolliants for 4-5 days.

My Results

I was so impressed with my first microneedling experience! My skin looked healthier and more radiant as each day progressed. I had two bothersome scars on my forehead that Olivia specifically focused on….one is completely gone, the other has shrunken and is less deep. The smile lines around my mouth are less pronounced. And my skin feels more smooth and soft. Microneedling was a very effective, easy, and relatively painless treatment that I felt hugely benefited my skin.
