How to Wear Wide Leg Pants

8 Chic Ways to Style This Comfy Fashion Trend That Is Here To Stay

After years of living in leggings and skinny jeans, I officially have made the plunge into wide leg pants. And like the saying “go big or go home” I went BIG when I bought these red linen wide leg trousers from Banana Republic. I have always loved red pants and wanted an updated look that went with the current fashion trends. Wide leg pants are such a comfortable and flattering style to wear; as long as you follow a few fashion guidelines (I never say rules). Even if you are not on the red pant bandwagon like me, but still want to know how to wear wide leg pants, this post is for you!

3 Wide Leg Pant Fashion Guidelines to Follow

  1. Tailored Fit – Wide leg pants should only be wide in the leg. To offset the larger leg, make sure the pant is fitted to your waist and rear for a polished look.
  2. Proper Hem Lines – If the hemlines are too long, your pants will look like they do not fit. A good spot for a full length wide leg pant is to hit just below the ankle.
  3. Proportion – Wide leg pants make a statement but they should not be overpowering. Take into your height, frame, and body type when choosing a pant leg width so your personality, not the pant’s, shines through.

8 Outfit Ideas with Wide Leg Pants

1) With A Crop Top

Contrast the excess material of a wide leg pant with a skin baring crop top that hits just above the waist band.

2) With A Tie Waist Button Down Shirt

Denim shirts go with everything. Tuck it in for a polished look. Or tie it in a knot at your waist for a more casual vibe.

3) With A Body Hugging Sweater

A snug-fit tucked in sweater (patterned or solid) gives a polished yet comfortable look. Be sure to add a belt to tie the two pieces together.

4) With An Oversized Coat

You would think a large coat and large pants would be too much. To me, this combination oozes sophistication. Somehow, the coat and pants balance each other out and give a runway ready style.

5) With A Classic White Button Down

Workwear but make it wide. A tucked in silk blouse (it is so fun to play with textures) makes this office look anything but boring. And just like with the tucked in fitted sweater, be sure to add a belt to pull the two pieces together.

6) With A Patterned Cami

Polka dots, stripes, plaids, floral, animal print, you catch my drift? If the wide leg pant is solid, add a fun eye-popping pattern or color to your outfit. The wide leg pants are already making a statement, let your top do so as well.

7) With A Cropped Jacket

Cropped pieces pair so well with this pant style. They accent the waist and hips while still balancing out the wide leg.

8) With A Cropped Sweater

A looser fitting sweater pairs well with these pants. Just make sure it hits at the waistband so the tailored parts of the pants still show.

Wide leg pants can be a flattering and fashionable look. And it looks like they aren’t going anywhere soon. Hopefully you were inspired to embrace this trend and learned a few tips on how to wear wide leg pants. Trust me, once you take the plunge you’ll see how effortlessly chic and easy these pants are to style.
