My Formal Sitting Room Reveal

We have been in our new house for just under 6 months. While the necessary rooms have been furnished (kitchen, bedrooms, living room, and dining room), there were two completely empty rooms in our house. Our formal sitting room and formal dining room had not one piece of furniture in them. In a way, it was nice to not have pressure or a time line to complete these rooms. But I did want to furnish them as soon as possible.

In May, my husband and I attended a Kentucky Derby party. I fell in love with a velvet Chesterfield sofa that was at the venue. Modern mid-century style is my favorite and I felt that type of sofa would be perfect for our formal sitting room.

With the Derby party sofa as inspiration, I bought this green velvet one from Wayfair. The rest of the room’s decor was chosen around this statement piece. I am beyond happy with how our formal sitting room turned out and I am excited to share it with you today.

This room gets so much natural light.

These long over sized canvas art pieces from Z Gallerie compliment the low sleek lines of the sofa. Fiddle leaf fig trees are great houseplants because they are hardy and hard to kill. I am still searching for a pot and plant stand that will fit well with this room’s decor.

Subtle black and gold accents are a simple way to add elegance to a room.

These mirrors were originally a red cherry stain and I used chalk paint to make them black.

These four mirrrors were one of the first furniture pieces my husband and I purchased 14 years ago as newlyweds. They are no longer in stock but I have linked similar ones here. We have styled them in various square and rectangle shapes to fit our different homes. For this room’s style and decor, we thought the rectangle shape was best.

Armless chairs are great space-saving furniture pieces.

These linen slipper chairs from Target are a great balance to the green velvet sofa. All three pieces share a similar tufted design, but the softness of the chair’s neutral color and texture provide contrast to the dramatic sofa.

This room has such an elegant yet casual feel. I like to sit in here to read, write, and drink my morning coffee. Let me know if you have any questions about our formal sitting room and I look forward to sharing more home decor and design ideas with you.
