How I turned my daughter’s small and narrow closet into an organized and efficient space.
My daughter has a beautiful bedroom. Her windows overlook the forest behind our backyard and she has one of the biggest bathrooms in the house (I know this will come into great use when she becomes a teenager). But her closet is small. It is a narrow rectangle shape with builder grade wire shelving along the walls. I had been wanting to do a closet makeover on this space since we moved in and finally set aside time to do so. My three objectives for this project were to increase clothes hanging space, add storage, and maximize the long narrow walls. Read on to see how I did this DIY small closet makeover.
I started by cleaning out her closet. I did a massive purge of too small clothes, out-grown toys, and extra knick-knacks and trinkets that kids are so good at collecting.
Once that was done, my husband removed the wire shelves. He patched the walls and then I painted them to match (our walls are Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray). Then it was time to head to Home Depot.
I chose this Closet Maid White Wood closet system. The 3 closet rods (they can be adjusted to fit different closet sizes) are a fabulous way to increase clothes hanging space. The 6 shelves are perfect for storage. At this age, my daughter will be using the shelves for toys but they will be filled with clothes, shoes, and jewelry sooner than later.
I also wanted to install wall hooks to hang backpacks, jackets, and purses. This wooden hook rack was extremely affordable and I liked the finished look. And the triple hooks maximized hanging capabilities.
Last, I wanted to add storage space along the back of the closet. My daughter chose this tiered cube organizer shelf. It is her closet after all, lol. We also got these 11″ storage bins (in her favorite color) to help organize and hide clutter.
Now it was time to go home and install.
