Last week, I went on a Duffy boat picnic and cruise with my family. These rent by the hour boat rides are one of my favorite things to do. Fresh ocean breezes, lapping waves, and beautiful scenery, I feel there is no better way to experience a Southern California summer.
After checking in (and loading up at the free popcorn machine), we were given a map and a brief boat driving tutorial. We then boarded our vessel and shipped out to seize the day. You can bring your own food and beverages aboard. I brought a summer picnic for our family to enjoy as we cruised around the Newport Harbor.
Each Duffy boat has a full canopy top and clear window enclosures you can roll down depending on the weather. The afternoon was a little breezy so we had the enclosures down for portions of our boat ride. But it had zero effect on our view or experience.
It was delightful to cruise through the channels and see the gorgeous homes that line the waterfront. Every architectural style was represented; shingled Capecod beach cottages, Mediterranean villas, Craftsman bungalows, and Contemporary mansions. They were all breathtaking. We also cruised by a myriad of boats and yachts. Some of these boats had clever tongue-in-cheek names. My two personal favorites were “Ship Faced” and “Holy Ship”.
We even got to see a pirate ship!! My children were extremely excited.
We saw a humongous sea lion sunning himself on a boat dock. My husband, aka the boat captain, was able to maneuver our vessel a few feet from the animal. I think the sea lion knew he was being watched because when we got close, he started showing off and barking. To my children’s delight, he carried on for almost a minute and continued to do so as we sailed away.
This was an incredible and unforgettable afternoon on the water.
If you are looking for an exciting and different way to enjoy a Southern California, a Duffy boat cruise is a definite must. Bon Voyage!
