A chic and classic wardrobe is easy to achieve if the right fashion must haves are at its foundation. So, what are fashion must haves? To me, they are a handful of key items that are elegant and versatile. They accentuate the beauty of their wearer and outlast trends and fads. I have a number of wardrobe staples in my closet but these are my 6 fashion must haves for a chic and classic wardrobe.
1) A Silk Camisole
This strappy top is a great addition to any closet. It is a great base layer under cardigans, blazers, or trendy coats. A silk camisole is sexy enough to be worn on its own for date night but also tame enough to be worn under a suit at the office.
Tip: Try and buy a cami made from “washable silk.” This cuts outs the need for (and cost of) dry cleaning.
2) Sleek High Heels
A great pair of high heels are elegant, classy, and oh so stylish. They compliment a variety of looks and can instantly glam up any outfit.
Tip: For maximum fashion versatility, purchase a pair of heels in nude and in black. These two classic colors can be worn in any season and give the option of a dramatic or delicate look, depending on the occasion.
3) Great Fitting Jeans
Jeans are such a versatile wardrobe item. They can be worn any season and with the correct top and accessories, can be formal, dressy, comfy, or casual. But remember, the absolute KEY to this fashion must have is the fit. The jeans needs to flatter the wearer’s body type and leg length. Each jean brand has their own cut and take on how pants should fit. Be persistent until you find the one that fits and accentuates your body frame and size.
Tip: To keep the jeans from fading, turn them inside out and then wash them in cold water. Be sure to dry them on the low/delicate cycle to prevent any shrinking or extra fading.
4) A Little Black Dress
Little Black Dresses (LBDs) are the Swiss Army knife of fashion; they can be styled in so many ways and everyone looks stunning in one. Wear a little black dress to the office with a blazer, on a date night with a shimmery clutch and a sleek high heel (fashion must have #2), or to lunch with a jean jacket and slip on tennis shoes. The outfit possibilities of an LBD are endless.
Tip: To increase the wearability of your little black dress, purchase one with a classic neckline and mid length hem. Though plunging necklines and miniskirt lengths are fun, they limit the number of places to wear your LBD.
5) A Denim or Chambray Button Up Shirt
This top is a fashion must have because it combines the versatility of denim with the classic line and cut of a button up blouse. Wear it buttoned up, tied at the waist, tucked into a skirt, under a sweater, or over a camisole. There are so many looks that can be achieved with this one top.
Tip: Like with the jeans, make sure to buy a button up shirt that fits well. The buttons should not pucker or gap when fastened. Be sure to check how the shirt fits in the back. A too-small-blouse will pull and squeeze at the back of the armpit area. c
6) A Leather Jacket
Nothing oozes fashion and style more than a beautiful buttery leather jacket. These coats instantly add style and dimension to an outfit while keeping it’s wearer warm and protected from the elements. For an even bolder look, venture away from the classic black leather and explore other timeless color options like chocolate brown, charcoal grey, olive green, or burgundy.
Tip:If possible, take the financial plunge and invest in a piece made of high quality 100% leather jacket. It will last longer, hold its shape better, and keep its wearer warmer than it’s less expensive counterparts. The red jacket I am wearing is 19 years old and look as good as it did the first day I got it!
