Over the holidays, I met with a makeup artist and she shared these 4 new tips get your makeup to look the best it ever has for the new year.
Whether you are a beginner or an expert, makeup tips and tricks always come in handy. And with the ever-changing trends and application techniques, it is always a good idea to re-evaluate your makeup routine once a year. Or be like me, and wait almost six years to do a product re-haul…yikes! Over the holidays, that is exactly what I did. I took my daughter out for a girls day at the local mall. Besides window shopping and getting lunch, I also scheduled a private makeup appointment for me at the MAC store (it’s actually a free service you can schedule online). It was an appointment well over due but absolutely worth it. Besides buying some new products (I’ll share those at the end of the post), my MAC makeup artist shared 4 makeup tips for 2024. Theses simple tricks are TOO GOOD to keep to myself and I knew I had to share them with you today.
1) Prep Your Foundation & Concealer Brush with Setting Spray
Setting spray is one of those “extra” makeup products that seem unneccesary. Then you try it and see how sweat-resistant, skin enhancing, and wear-extending it is and there is no turning back. Normally, setting spray is applied to the face at the end of the makeup routine. But my makeup artist said to spray a small amount of setting spray on my brush before I put on foundation. The purpose for this is two-fold. First, the setting spray preps and wets the brush so it absorbs less of your foundation meaning more product and coverage on your face. Second, the setting spray gets evenly applied to the base layer of your makeup routine.
2) Draw Eyeliner from the Outside In
Eyeliner application is not for the faint of heart. Especially when a “slightly winged cat eye” liner is trending. To ensure a smooth eyeliner line that ends where you want it to, my makeup artist said to start at the outside of the eye. Then bring the line across the eyelid to the inner corner of the eye. Starting where the line “ends” means you will have complete control of the wing shape, thickness and application. Plus this technique helps to make the eyeliner even on both eyes.
3) Horizontal Is Out, Vertical Is In
Ever since I started wearing eyeshadow I have always applied it in a “rainbow” shape. A medium color on the eyelid. A darker shade above it in the crease. Then the lightest shade swept across my browbone and maybe a dark color on the outer edge if I wanted a “smoky eye.” Well, it’s time to retire the rainbow and say hello to the dial. In other words, separate your eyelid into two or three vertical sections to apply the eyeshadow. Still highlight the browbone horizontally with a light color but all color on the eyelid should be vertical.
4) Bronzer – the New Makeup Multitasker
Bronzer is a great makeup product that adds contour to the face. It is a popular way to get that “just back from the Bahamas sun-kissed glow” without needing a passport. Usually applied to the cheekbones, jawline, temples and hairline, bronzer surprisingly makes for a beautiful eyeshadow. My makeup artist said this warm color can help alleviate the look of tired eyes and is a great base for a dramatic eyeliner look. And if you’re wearing something with a statement making neckline, brush this bronzer on the collarbone and cleavage for subtle definition, glow and glamour.
Such great makeup tips for 2024! I have been incorporating them into my makeup routine and love how they help. The eyeliner hack is my favorite; it’s definitely a game changer for even application. It’s fun to switch up a routine and try new looks and what better time than now as the New Year kicks off!
